What you can find here are simple explanations on complex topics around child development and soft skills building.

We have written the book to be read by parents together with their children. We wanted to create a ‘tool’ you have together to start discovering the fascinating world of human mind, from how the brain works to how mindsets and habits are formed. It can also become a guide of daily activities you can do to bring the benefits of this knowledge into your child life, easier and with fun.

We intent this book to be an introduction, to stimulate children’s curiosity. We hope to make the first steps in this self development journey more accessible for them.

What we want to give parents & children: a guideline or roadmap to navigate along the way. To support you in understanding the impact of today’s learning for the future. Because we know that each parent wants the best for their children.

How Help Kids PRO started

I have 2 amazing children that are now 15 and 10. As the kids grew up, their exposure to technology grew also. Both me and my husband are working in tech fields and we understand the benefits of building tech skills that they will need for their future. But equally we...

Screen time pros & cons

According to Childhood Development Specialist Moloney, Technology can actually have a very positive effect on a child’s development when used correctly.

The ability to identify key information within a cluster of words or advertisements has increased as technology has become more integrated in our lives. We have become more used in identifying and seeing hints in a mass of information. Our brains ability to focus on single things has increased, improved.

Another positive benefit is that regular interaction with technology can lead to improved hand-eye coordination, multi-tasking (or rather the ability to switch the focus fast from one thing to another.

 Critical thinking

The increase of technology leads to a decrease in daily reading as text blocks on digital devices are written in 140 characters or less. Such texts to not challenge children to think critically or expand on their thoughts.

Attention & imagination

The attention span is a skill that can be trained. The max attention span for full concentration lies by 45 minutes. Children often can only focus 5-10 minutes. Unfortunately with the various forms of technology available, children are often more distracted. A range of apps are specifically designed to disrupt the attention span.

With a great deal of visual stimuli for anything and a lack of story reading, it can impact a child’s development of imagination.

The most vulnerable target group:

Teen girls who spend multiple hours a day using screens. Many of the pressures young teens experience from social media are actually consistent with the normal concerns in such a development phase, concerns around social standing and self-expression.

Why is it important to have offline time?

Some things can only others better learned offline. For example, languages, emergent literacy skills and reading facial expressions. Kids are under 5 years should spend no to little time with screens. Reading books, drawing a picture or other offline activities

Also reading books together in the evening helps to wind down the child. Contrary, the blue light of screens can wind children up and block the sleep hormone which is responsible for a healthy sleep.

Healthy habits

Apps and social media platforms create a short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops. They trigger the very same neural circuity as slot machines or cocaine effects.

Dopamine is a chemical produced by our brains that plays a starring role in motivating behaviour. Amongst others it gets released when we have successful social interactions.

Habits are formed in the same part of the brain that is also responsible for the development of emotions, memories and pattern recognition. Habits are a mechanism of our brain to increase the efficiency.  The tend to be automatic, uncontrolled, and often unintentional.

Doing something without too much thoughts frees up brainpower for important challenges.

Example: When you hang your jacket in the closet every time when you come home, and you do not even think any more about it. When you hang your jacket and it’s like you are on autopilot, then this is a habit.

If every time you come home you should hang the jacket in the closet AND the bag behind the door, there are two action steps to take. If both are automatic, you do not need to think about it. If hanging the jacket is automatic, you will remember 50% of the time to hang the bag behind the door. If you are not used to do neither, it will take an effort to remember it each time.

You can teach your child gradually what to do and when by being a good example. They will learn automatically and without big efforts. The responsibility level and amount of actions they take will grow gradually. When they become older, they will be able to take care of more and more things.

It is the same as if you would go for the gym. When you start training your physics, you begin with lifting 10 kilo. Gradually you take on more and more weight. It is the same with teaching your children empowering habits and responsibility.

We used exactly this approach for our activities and programs to support you in the best possible way.

Kids group 6-8: live the good example

Kids group 9-11 & 12+: explain what is a habit and why it is useful

When we are talking about healthy habits we mean in general those habits that empower your children. Those are amongst others: healthy diet, regular physical activity, spreading kindness to others, taking care of yourself, emotional regulation, good sleep hygiene and socializing with friends.

Empowering habits are actions that your child will do automatically and that will have a positive effect on their own life or their surroundings.

Self-efficacy, self-confidence, self-esteem

Self-esteem first begins to rise between ages 4-11 as children develop socially ad cognitively and gain some sense of independence.

“Whether you think that you can or that you can’t, you usually right.” – Henry Ford

Self-efficacy is important for academic success and well-being in children.

Self-efficacy is the belief that you are capable of performing a task or managing a situation. When a child understands that success is connected to its internal factors, they develop a sense of mastery, which reinforces stronger self-efficacy beliefs.

A child with high self-efficacy works harder, as they have experienced the feeling of achievement and satisfaction. The knowledge about the results of their own efforts helps them to be more optimistic and less anxious to try out things. Even when something is not working immediately, they are more perseverant.

Instead of giving your child everything they ask for, they should put some effort into it before receiving a rewarding result. A child that simply has everything without any effort, develops the belief that everything has to happen after its own will without any action from their side. As soon as they encounter a challenge, they are lost.

Those children that gain more experience from positive results after putting in effort, train different skills that help them to overcome challenges. They will gradually develop a strong mindset and will to persevere, as our activities are adapted to their level of development.

Skills that develop through self-efficacy & that are important for their professional & daily life:

  • High motivation
  • Positive thinking when facing a challenge
  • Perseverance
  • Resilience
  • Stress resistance
  • Strong mental health

Our activities empower the child to have a realistic sense of their strengths and weaknesses. This knowledge drives their actions and willingness to set specific goals and achievements in life.

How can you as a parent support your child?

You can nurture realistic self-efficacy by praising honestly, helping set short-term goals and helping children learn from setbacks.

What happens when you use our activity sheets?

Your child develops a feeling of mastery, learns to overcome a challenge early on, hears a praise for their effort instead of an ability. Identifying the skills helps your child rely on them when coping through a difficult situation.
